When I got pregnant I promised myself I’d never ever become someone who listened to children’s music against my will. My daughter is now 2 years and 3 months old. She requests all of these songs by name (in a toddler way) and recognizes all of them less than 3 seconds in, way before I do. And she discovered a few of these artists and asked for more of their songs, which kinda blew my mind cuz 2 years ago she was a wriggling worm who couldn’t hold her head up and now she’s all, “I love Phil Collins In the Air Tonight drum part, Mama, and Soundgarden have so good drums too, Mama and I want play drums too!!”

And yeah, some of them will probably have to be shelved when she starts asking about the lyrics, but thankfully 2017 was not yet that time. And hopefully she’ll stop asking me to take her to “meet Chris and hear his Soundgarden singing and write Chris note” one of these days cuz it breaks my heart a little every time.
2017 was a pretty lame year in the big scheme of things, but I had fun not listening to songs that sound like what my little sister Kaydi used to sing along with on Barney. I really hated that stupid purple dinosaur... But I did allow Bing Crosby’s Teddy Bear’s Picnic to weasel it’s way into the mix because I’m not a total monster.
Maybe one day Violet will have her own drum set one day and I’m sure I’ll have a headache but it’ll still be better than Barney.
